Description:

At 0932hrs on 16th July 1969 the giant Saturn V rocket was launched from the launchpad at Cape Canaveral on the most important journey in the history of mankind. The giant Saturn V consisted of three main stages, was 110 meters (361 ft) high and weighed 3,000 tons. It could carry a payload of 50 tons and reach a speed of 11.2 km/second (25050 mph). The 394,000 km ( 244,800 mile) journey to the moon took 72 hours. After achieving low Earth Orbit, the upper assembly with the Apollo Capsule received a final push from the third stage rocket thrusters to achieve the speed required for its flight to the moon. Later the Apollo module broke away from the rocket, turned and pulled the Lunar Module from its protective covering. Coupled together like this, the combination eventually reached the Moon and entered Lunar orbit. After several Lunar orbits the Lunar Module with the astronauts N. Armstrong and E. Aldrin on board separated from the Command Module in which only the astronaut M. Collins remained. With two firings of the retro rockets the Lunar Module commenced its final approach into the Sea of Tranquillity . This historic event will be remembered for eternity.

Revell the American big boys are some of the longest and largest steam locomotives ever built anywhere in the world. During the late Thirties Union Pacific often used auxiliary engines to haul trains from Ogden, Utah up a steep pass to watch. U.p. Wished to simplify this system and instructed their own development department to design a new locomotive capable of hauling a 3, 600 ton train (Max 4, 200 tons) up the steep pass. The 25 big boy locomotives were built in 2 groups. The first group, called the class 1, was built from 1941. The second, class 2, was built in 1944. The last goods train was hauled by a big boy loco in July 1959. Most big boys were retired from service in 1961.

The keel of the Titanic was laid on 31. 03. 1909 at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland. The liner was equipped with the ultimate in elegance and luxury for service with the noted transatlantic White Star Line. Two years later, on 31. 05. 1911 the Titanic was launched. With a length of 269. 04 m, a beam of 28. 19 m and a tonnage of 46, 320 GRT, in 1912 she was the largest ship in the world. Captain Edward John Smith transferred from her sister ship the Olympic specifically for the maiden voyage of the Titanic. On Wednesday 10. 04. 1912 she set out from Southampton. Cherbourg (France) and Queenstown (Ireland) were stops on the way to New York (USA). The voyage proceeded without problems until, following numerous warnings of icebergs, on Sunday (14. 04. 1912) at about 23. 40 hours (ship's time) the look-out's bell rang out. The ship scraped against the iceberg on the starboard side and after two hours and forty minutes in the icy waters of the Atlantic she sank. Only 712 souls survived this disaster.
